Your files stay on your device

When you open a file in ElniDocs, your browser reads and processes it itself, on your device. No file, content or password is sent to the publisher or to anyone else.

This is more than a promise: the site is published with a Content Security Policy that lets the browser contact only the site's own server and, when it is on, the visitor statistics described below. That server delivers the pages and receives only the messages of the contact form, limited to a few lines of text: it cannot receive any file.

You can check it: open your browser's developer tools ("Network" tab) while using a tool, or go offline once the page has loaded: the tools keep working.

What is stored in your browser

So that you can pick up your work again, some information is kept in your browser's storage, on your device only:

  • your recent documents and their drafts, saved automatically, with a small preview;
  • your preferences: language, light or dark theme, recent fonts, ribbon display;
  • the author name you enter for comments and tracked changes;
  • the site's own files (pages, scripts), so that it works offline.

This information is never sent to us. You can delete a document from the list of recent documents, or erase everything from your browser settings (browsing data or site data). A document erased from the browser cannot be recovered: no copy of it exists anywhere else.

This storage is strictly necessary for the service you ask for; it is not used to track or identify you. That is why no consent banner is shown.

No cookies, no trackers

ElniDocs uses no cookies, no advertising pixels, no social media buttons and no third-party services: fonts, PDF engines and text recognition models are all served by the site itself.

The only exception: to block malicious bots, Cloudflare may set a short-lived technical security cookie (for instance "__cf_bm"), strictly necessary and never used to track you.

Audience measurement

To know which tools are useful, ElniDocs counts page views with Umami, an open-source audience measurement tool hosted by the publisher itself. It sets no cookie, stores nothing on your device, does not follow you from site to site and never knows your files or their names: it only receives the page address, the site you came from, the language, the type of device and the country (derived from the IP address, which is not kept).

If your browser sends the "Do Not Track" signal, no page view is counted. These statistics are aggregated and only used to improve the service.

Hosting, delivery and technical logs

The site is hosted by OVHcloud (France) and delivered by Cloudflare, a network that speeds up its display and protects it against attacks. As for any website, these providers receive technical information on each visit: IP address, date, requested page, browser type. They may keep it for a limited time for the security and proper operation of the service. This information never contains your files, and the publisher does not use it for profiling or commercial purposes.

Cloudflare, Inc. is an American company: some of this technical data may be processed outside the European Union, under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.

Features of your browser

Some features are provided by your browser, not by ElniDocs. Spell checking uses the browser's checker; some browsers offer an "enhanced" checker that sends the text to their maker: this is a setting of your browser, which you can turn off. Reading aloud only uses the voices installed on your device.

If you write to us

If you contact us by e-mail, your address and message are only used to reply to you and are not kept longer than necessary. Do not attach confidential documents to your messages.

The contact form sends your address, the subject and the message (and, for a bug, if you leave it ticked, your browser, system and screen size) to our inbox, hosted by OVH. To limit abuse, the sending IP address is kept in memory for 24 hours at most, never recorded or linked to your message.

Your rights

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) lets you access your data, have it corrected or erased, and object to its processing. As ElniDocs collects no data about you, these rights mainly concern e-mail exchanges: write to the address given in the legal notice.

You may also lodge a complaint with the Belgian Data Protection Authority: www.dataprotectionauthority.be.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version is published on this page with its update date.
