In short

This tool adds content to a PDF: filling in by hand a form that has no fields, annotating a document under review, placing a logo or a remark on it. Add text (Helvetica, Times or Courier, in the size and colour you choose), PNG, JPEG or WebP images, rectangles, ellipses, lines, arrows, freehand drawings and notes, and highlight, underline or strike out the text of the page. Additions are saved as real annotations, which can then be edited in Acrobat Reader, Foxit or macOS Preview, or merged into the pages if you tick “Flatten”. Text already in the PDF cannot be edited, and highlighting needs selectable text: a scan goes through OCR first. The document stays in your browser.

How it works

Drop your PDF: its pages appear as you scroll.
Choose a tool: text (font, size, colour), image, rectangle, ellipse, line, arrow, freehand drawing, note, or highlight, underline or strike out the text of the page; click or drag on the page.
Move, resize or delete what you added (Ctrl+Z undoes), then save the PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Can the additions still be edited in Acrobat?

Yes: they are saved as real PDF annotations (text, image stamp, shapes, ink, highlights, notes), which Acrobat Reader, Foxit or macOS Preview display, list and let you edit. Tick “Flatten” to merge them into the pages for good; notes then stay comments.

Can I edit the text already in the PDF?

Not yet: rewriting the original text is fragile (partially embedded fonts, text split into pieces). To correct a word, cover it with a filled white rectangle and type over it; to remove information for good, use “Redact a PDF”.

Does highlighting work on a scanned document?

It needs selectable text: run the document through OCR first to make it searchable, then highlight.

What about a PDF of several hundred pages?

Pages are rendered on demand as you scroll, and the text of a page is only read when you highlight on it: a large document opens without waiting.

Are my files sent to a server?

No. Everything is processed in your browser, on your device: no file is sent anywhere, neither to ElniDocs nor to anyone else. You can check this by going offline once the page has loaded: the tool keeps working.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is free, with no sign-up, no adverts and no watermark added to your files. The only limit is your device's memory (up to 500 MB per file).
