Edit Word documents online, for free

Write and format your documents, then save them as Word (.docx) or PDF.

A complete word processor, in your browser

The ElniDocs editor for Word files opens your .docx files and lets you edit them as in an installed word processor: styles, headings, multilevel numbered lists, tables, images, headers and footers, footnotes, a table of contents. You save the result in Word format (.docx), which then opens in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs, or as a PDF to send it.

Everything happens on your device. The file is sent to no server, neither to ElniDocs nor to anyone else: cut your connection once the page has loaded, and the editor keeps working.

What you can do

  • Write and format: fonts, sizes, colours, highlighting, superscripts, heading and paragraph styles.
  • Structure: bulleted, numbered (1.1.1, a., i.) or check-box lists, numbered headings, a navigation pane, a table of contents.
  • Insert tables (merged cells, shading, resizable columns), images, headers and footers, footnotes.
  • Review: tracked changes and comments, kept in the .docx file.
  • Compare two versions of a document: the differences show as tracked changes.
  • Prepare a mail merge, then save as .docx or PDF.

Who is it for?

For fixing a contract or a CV received as a .docx on a computer without Microsoft Office. For working on a Chromebook, on Linux or on a work PC where nothing can be installed. For confidential documents that must not go through the cloud. For writing on the move, even without a connection.

Limits to know about

  • Old .doc files (Word 97-2003) and .odt files do not open yet: save them as .docx first.
  • There is no real-time co-writing: everyone works on their own copy, and comments and tracked changes stay in the file.
  • Very elaborate layouts may differ slightly: check the result before an important send.

In short

This editor opens, edits and creates Word documents (.docx) without Microsoft Word or an account: a letter, a CV, a report, the minutes of a meeting. Start from a blank page, a template (CV, letters, report, invoice…) or a .docx, Markdown, text or HTML file. The ribbon covers everyday formatting, multilevel lists, tables, images, headers and footers, as well as tracked changes, comments, the table of contents, footnotes and mail merge. The result is saved as .docx, PDF, Markdown or plain text. Old .doc files and .odt files do not open, and a very elaborate layout may differ slightly: check it before an important send. The document is processed in your browser.

How it works

  1. Start from a blank page, or open a .docx file.
  2. Write and format with the ribbon: styles, lists (numbered, bulleted or task lists with check boxes), tables, images, headers and footers.
  3. Save the result as Word (.docx) or PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit a Word document without Microsoft Word or a subscription?

Yes: the editor opens and saves .docx files without Microsoft Word, without a Microsoft 365 subscription and without an account. The saved file then opens normally in Word.

Are Word files reproduced faithfully?

Content and everyday formatting are kept both when opening and when saving. Very elaborate layouts may differ slightly, so check the result before an important send.

Can I open an old .doc file or an .odt file?

Not yet: the editor opens .docx and .docm files, as well as Markdown, text and HTML. Save a .doc or .odt file as .docx first, with the software that created it.

Can I track changes and add comments?

Yes: tracked changes and comments are supported and kept in the .docx file, as are the table of contents, footnotes and mail merge.

Can lists be numbered 1.1.1, or restarted at 1?

Yes: the multilevel list library offers 1.1.1, 1.a.i or 1) a) i), and can number the headings. Right-click in a numbered list to restart at 1, continue the numbering or set the starting value. Bullets can be any character.

Do I need to install any software?

No: everything works in the browser, on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, Android, iPhone and iPad.

Are my files sent to a server?

No. Everything is processed in your browser, on your device: no file is sent anywhere, neither to ElniDocs nor to anyone else. You can check this by going offline once the page has loaded: the tool keeps working.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is free, with no sign-up, no adverts and no watermark added to your files. The only limit is your device's memory (up to 500 MB per file).
