Edit Excel files online, for free

Create or edit a workbook: formulas, sorting, filters. Works with Excel (.xlsx), OpenDocument (.ods) and CSV.

Processed on your device, nothing uploaded

A complete spreadsheet, in your browser

The ElniDocs editor for Excel files opens your .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb, OpenDocument (.ods) and CSV workbooks and lets you edit them as in an installed spreadsheet: several hundred functions, sorting and filters, conditional formatting, charts, pivot tables, data validation. You save as .xlsx, .ods or .csv, or print to PDF.

Everything happens on your device. The workbook is sent to no server, neither to ElniDocs nor to anyone else: cut your connection once the page has loaded, and the spreadsheet keeps working.

What you can do

  • Calculate: several hundred functions (SUM, IF, XLOOKUP, COUNTIF, dynamic arrays…), with their English or French names.
  • Sort on several columns and filter by ticking values.
  • Format: number formats, borders, colours, conditional formatting by rule or by formula.
  • Analyse: pivot tables with their fields pane, customisable charts.
  • Open workbooks with macros (.xlsm) safely: VBA macros are never run.
  • Work on large files: hundreds of thousands of rows, as the grid only draws what is visible.

Who is it for?

For opening a spreadsheet received by email without Excel. For working on sensitive figures (payroll, accounts, a customer list) without sending them to the cloud. For a Chromebook, Linux or a locked-down PC. For turning a CSV into an .xlsx in seconds.

Limits to know about

  • VBA macros are never run; they can be kept in an .xlsm when saving.
  • There is no real-time co-editing: everyone works on their own copy.
  • An .xlsb opens with its values, formulas and number formats, without its advanced formatting, and is saved as .xlsx.

In short

This spreadsheet opens, edits and creates workbooks without Excel or an account: a budget, a stock tracker, a CSV export to tidy up. It reads Excel (.xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb, .xls), OpenDocument (.ods) and CSV files, calculates several hundred functions with their English or French names, and handles sorting, filters, conditional formatting, charts and pivot tables. It saves as .xlsx, .ods or .csv, or prints to PDF. VBA macros are never run; those in an .xlsm can be kept as they are. An .xlsb or an old .xls opens with its values and formulas, without its advanced formatting. Workbooks with several hundred thousand rows open. Calculations happen in your browser.

How it works

  1. Create a blank workbook or open an Excel (.xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb), OpenDocument (.ods) or CSV file.
  2. Enter your data and formulas, sort, filter, format and add charts.
  3. Save as .xlsx, .ods or .csv, or print to PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open an Excel file without Excel or a Microsoft account?

Yes: the editor opens and saves .xlsx workbooks without Microsoft Excel, without a subscription and without an account. The saved workbook keeps its formulas and then opens normally in Excel.

Do Excel formulas work?

Yes, several hundred functions are calculated (SUM, IF, XLOOKUP, COUNTIF, dynamic arrays…), with their English or French names. VBA macros are never run.

Can I make pivot tables and charts?

Yes: pivot tables with their fields pane (drag and drop, dates grouped by month, quarter or year, calculated fields, filters, styles), read and written as real Excel PivotTables; charts, conditional formatting, filters and data validation are available and saved in the file.

Can I open a workbook with macros (.xlsm) or in binary format (.xlsb)?

Yes. An .xlsm opens with its data and formatting; a banner says that its macros are never run. When saving, you choose to keep them (the VBA project is copied as is into an .xlsm) or to save an .xlsx without macros. An .xlsb opens with its values, formulas and number formats; advanced formatting (styles, charts, rules) is not read, and it is saved as .xlsx.

How large a file can it handle?

Workbooks with several hundred thousand rows open, because the grid only draws what is visible. The limit depends on your device's memory.

Can I use it on a phone or a tablet?

Yes: tap a cell to select it, tap it again to edit it (the keyboard opens), or tap the formula bar. The ribbon scrolls with a swipe or with its arrows.

Are my files sent to a server?

No. Everything is processed in your browser, on your device: no file is sent anywhere, neither to ElniDocs nor to anyone else. You can check this by going offline once the page has loaded: the tool keeps working.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is free, with no sign-up, no adverts and no watermark added to your files. The only limit is your device's memory (up to 500 MB per file).
