In short
This tool displays any file without installing software: an email attachment, a file in an unfamiliar format, the contents of an archive. It recognises the real type from the content, not from the name, and flags a misleading extension. It reads PDFs, Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx, .xls), OpenDocument (.ods) and PowerPoint (.pptx) files, images, text, emails, calendars and contacts, any audio and video your browser can play, and browses ZIP archives without extracting anything. It opens one file at a time, without changing it. Old .doc and .ppt files, .odt files, Outlook messages (.msg), HEIC photos and RAR or 7z archives are not displayed. The file is read in your browser.
How it works
- Drop any file into the area, or choose it from your device.
- ElniDocs recognises its real type from its content and shows it in the right viewer.
- Then choose what to do next: convert, edit, compress, or open another file.
Frequently asked questions
Which formats can be opened?
PDF, Word, Excel, OpenDocument (.ods), PowerPoint, images (JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF, SVG…), text and code, JSON, Markdown, ZIP archives, emails, and any audio and video your browser can play. Other files are shown with their properties and their hexadecimal content.
What if a file's extension is misleading?
The type is detected from the file's content, not its name: a “.jpg” that is really a PDF is flagged, which helps you spot a suspicious attachment.
Can I open a file inside a ZIP?
Yes: browse the archive and open the file you want directly, without extracting anything to your disk.
Are my files sent to a server?
No. Everything is processed in your browser, on your device: no file is sent anywhere, neither to ElniDocs nor to anyone else. You can check this by going offline once the page has loaded: the tool keeps working.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
It is free, with no sign-up, no adverts and no watermark added to your files. The only limit is your device's memory (up to 500 MB per file).
